12cm Compact Red Chest Drum With Buffalo Hide for Processions and Lunar New Year Parades

Chest Drums (Xionggu)

A 12 cm compact red chest drum is the parade-size festival drum: a one-sided goblet body on a single pedestal foot, small enough to carry between stops and tuned to the warm, carrying note that holds a procession in time. It is the drum a Spring Festival parade line reaches for — the red drum that reads from the back of a crowd and keeps a moving column together.

What sets the 12 cm apart is that it is genuinely compact. Before the specs, it helps to know what a parade line asks of a drum: it gets carried between venues, set down on pavement, struck hard in the cold, and packed away again and again. The 12 cm answers that with a one-piece PVC goblet body, a full-grain water-buffalo hide head, gold hardware, and a dedicated red carry bag that makes it easy to move. Every drum is made by hand in the Matun drum village.

What a Parade Line Needs

Four things decide whether a festival drum works in a procession or ends up left behind:

01It has to carry across a crowd

A parade note must reach the back of a watching crowd and hold a line of dancers in step. The one-sided goblet head gives that focused, projecting sound even at a compact size.

02It has to be light enough to carry

A procession moves between stops. A compact, light drum on a shoulder strap travels with the line; a heavy one gets left in the van.

03It has to look like the festival

The red drum is the visual anchor of a Lunar New Year procession. On a parade route, that red is half the performance.

04It has to stand on its own

The single pedestal foot means the drum stands upright on any flat ground — no separate stand to carry, set up and break down between stops.

Compact Enough to Carry Between Stops

The 12 cm is the compact chest drum, and that matters on a parade route. At 12 × 25 cm it is light enough for a performer to carry on the shoulder strap between venues, and small enough to stand on a patch of pavement without taking up space in a moving line. The one-piece blow-molded PVC body with no seam to split shrugs off the bumps of travel, and the pedestal foot lets it stand upright the moment it is set down.

The head is full-grain water-buffalo hide, de-haired but undyed — it shows the grain marks and light color variation of genuine hide, not defects. That hide is what gives the compact drum its warm, projecting note: small enough to carry, loud enough to reach the back of a parade crowd. Gold round-head tacks sit in one clean ring with gold trim, and side metal rings take the shoulder strap.

The Red Drum for the New Year

The 12 cm comes in four color lines: plain red, plain blue, and the red-and-gold and blue-and-gold dragon versions. For a Lunar New Year procession, the plain red is the classic choice — the drum an audience pictures when it thinks of a festival parade, and the one that reads strongest at the front of a moving column.

The dragon lines add a decorative option for groups that want more color, while the plain colors keep a large line clean and consistent on a budget. For a parade, red is where most lines start.

The Bag and the Full Kit

What makes the 12 cm a real parade tool is the kit it ships in. A dedicated red carry bag — a round zippered case with a shoulder strap — turns the drum into gear a performer can carry between stops. The full set adds sticks, a cloth, a shoulder strap and clappers, so a player is ready to perform as soon as the bag is unzipped.

For a procession that moves between stages, schools and parade routes, that portability is the difference between a drum that gets used and one that gets left behind. The bag protects the water-buffalo hide head and the gold hardware in transit, and the shoulder strap carries the compact drum hands-free.

Chest Drum or Waist Drum

The chest drum and the waist drum are built for different jobs. The chest drum stands on its own pedestal and plays upright at chest height, which suits a solo feature or a festive stage line where the drum is the focus. The waist drum hangs on a sash at the hip and plays while the body moves, which suits marching lines and dance troupes. For a stationary parade feature, the chest drum is the one; for a moving, dancing line, the waist drum is.

Outfitting the Line

Ordering for a parade line is about consistency. Tell us the event, the number of players and which color line you want — plain red for the New Year procession, or the dragon lines for more color — and we will build a matching set with consistent body, hide and hardware across the whole line. For a large order or a custom look, our OEM and ODM options cover custom sizing, paint and packaging. A good way to start is with one drum: run a full procession on it, check the bag, the hide and the hardware under real use, then outfit the whole line.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a 12 cm compact chest drum?

It is the parade-size Chinese chest drum — a one-sided goblet body on a single pedestal foot, with a full-grain water-buffalo hide head. At 12 × 25 cm it is compact enough to carry on a shoulder strap between stops, and it ships with a red carry bag, sticks and a strap. It is the drum used for processions and Lunar New Year parades.

What hide is the chest drum head made from?

Full-grain water-buffalo hide, one piece, de-haired but undyed. It shows the grain marks and light color variation of genuine hide, not defects, and it gives the compact drum its warm, projecting note — small enough to carry, loud enough to reach the back of a parade crowd.

Is the compact chest drum easy to carry in a procession?

Yes. At 12 × 25 cm it is the compact size, light enough to carry on the shoulder strap between venues, and it ships in a dedicated red carry bag — a round zippered case that protects the hide head and hardware in transit. The single pedestal foot means it stands upright the moment it is set down.

Chest drum or waist drum for a parade — which one?

It depends on how the line moves. The chest drum stands on its own pedestal and plays upright at chest height — good for a stationary parade feature where the drum is the focus. The waist drum hangs on a sash at the hip and plays while the body moves — good for a dancing, marching line. Both share the same festival look and carry bag.
